How to Use This Tool
- Enter your current grade in the class as a percentage.
- Enter the final overall grade you want to achieve.
- Enter how much the final exam counts toward your overall grade.
- The score you need on the final updates automatically.
How It Works
Your final overall grade is a blend of your current grade and your final exam score, weighted by how much the exam counts. The formula is:
needed score = (desired grade − current grade × (1 − weight)) / weight
where weight is the final exam’s weight written as a decimal (20% becomes 0.2).
Example
Your current grade is 85%, you want to finish with a 90%, and the final exam is worth 20% of your grade.
needed score = (90 − 85 × 0.8) / 0.2 = (90 − 68) / 0.2 = 110% — not achievable, since it is above 100%.
Benefits
- Know exactly what to aim for before finals week.
- Instantly see if a target grade is realistic.
- No sign-up — recalculate as many times as you like.
Important Notes
This tool gives an informational estimate based on the numbers you enter. It does not know your school’s specific grading policies, curves, or extra credit rules. Always confirm your required score with your instructor or course syllabus before making study decisions.
