How It Works

decimal hours = hours + (minutes / 60)

To reverse the conversion, the whole-number part becomes hours, and the remaining fraction is multiplied by 60 to get minutes.

Example

7 hours and 30 minutes: 7 + (30 / 60) = 7 + 0.5 = 7.50 decimal hours.

Reversed: 7.50 hours → 7 whole hours, 0.50 × 60 = 30 minutes.

Why is 30 minutes equal to .50, not .30?

Decimal hours are a fraction of 60 minutes, not 100. 30 minutes is half an hour, so it converts to 0.50 hours (30 ÷ 60 = 0.5), not 0.30. Treating minutes as if they were already a percentage is one of the most common payroll mistakes.

Why does payroll use decimal hours instead of hours and minutes?

Decimal hours are easier to multiply by an hourly rate. For example, 7.5 hours × $20/hr = $150 is a simple multiplication, while 7 hours 30 minutes × $20/hr requires an extra conversion step first.
